As a single mum, they say you’ve gotta be okay ask As a single mum, they say you’ve gotta be okay asking for help.

I think most of the time I am, but sometimes I don’t realise when I could ask for help, if that makes sense.

It’s not that I get the thought “I should ask for help” and then I don’t ask…

… it’s that sometimes I don’t even think to ask. I just carry on and carry through.

But then there are times when I know that I physically cannot do that, either because of time constraints, or strength constraints.

Today a portable air con unit arrived that I’d ordered for the kids a couple weeks ago.

As the delivery guy called me on arrival, he asked what the access was like. I explained that there’s one flight of stairs up to my apartment, and I asked if he would be able to bring it upstairs for me? I didn’t want to be seen as weak, but also it’s bloody heavy.

“Sorry ma’am” he said. “I’m just a courier, we’re not allowed inside.”

I felt tears pricking behind my eyes, because I knew there’d been no way in hell I’d get this giant box up not one, but two, flights of stairs—first from the garage up to my apartment, and then from my front door up to the bedroom, because our apartment is split level.

He already said no, but I asked again. What more could I lose?

“I’m a single mum, is there any way you could please help me, otherwise that box is staying on the ground floor.”

I could feel his pause.

“Absolutely, I will do that for you.”

I realised I’d actually been holding my breath, already trying to problem solve his no. (Asking a random neighbour was first on my list.)

When he came inside and brought the box right to my kids’ bedroom, I thanked him so much. I wanted to tell him he had done a mitzvah (which in Judaism, is a good deed, an act of kindness) but then I thought, no I don’t want him to know I’m Jewish.

So I just thanked him again, and off with our days we both went.

And I was reminded that asking for help (even if I get a no first) doesn’t make me weak, because how can you be weak when you know you’re so fucking strong (even/especially when you ask for help). 🙏🏻
