4 ways to protect your own energy

Protecting your own energy is important

Our thoughts, emotions and interactions with others affects our energy, and our energetic field.

You know those times you say “yes” to someone or something, and instantly feel drained?

Or those times you meet a friend for lunch, and feel exhausted when you leave?

Or even the times you simply walk into a room and the energy feels heavy?

These are just some examples of times we need to be aware of our energy; how we’re looking after it, protecting it, who we’re giving it to, or to which situations (or thoughts) we’re leaking our precious energy.

Let’s look at a few simple ways you can protect your own energy:

1. Set energetic boundaries

When I first started out seeing clients for kinesiology sessions, I would sometimes spend the entire morning before seeing clients in a thick head fog, completely exhausted, and unsure why.

On these days, as soon as my client would leave my clinic, I’d feel light and energised, and back to myself.

Then one day I realised I was only feeling this way when I was about to see particular clients with fatigue and anxiety. I was tapping into their energy and “surrogating” for them (which we’ll go through in a moment). This was leaving me feeling so exhausted and drained.

I started setting an intention before I saw any clients, that my energy was my own. I set the intention to keep my energy to myself, so I could more fully serve my clients, and myself.

I also started to clear my energy and the room’s energy after each client session, by either using an energetic room clearing spray, or by washing my hands and setting the intention to release the previous client’s energy and session (or by doing both). I still do this, after every client.

For you, this might mean you go into a meeting or on a lunch date date with someone who you’ve let drain your energy in the past, but this time you set the intention that no matter what happens, your energy stays with you, and that you are safe and protected.

For extra support, use these affirmations to help call your energy back to you:

My energy is protected, and is completely my own.

I call my energy back to me.

I easily and joyfully protect my own energy.

I have clear, healthy and firm boundaries.

2. Use the bubble technique

This works beautifully if you’re about to spend time with people who you feel a little bit uncomfortable around, or in a situation where you often feel a bit attacked, squashed or drained, or when you spend time with someone who has a lot of their own stuff going on and they often project it onto you.

Imagine yourself in a beautiful white or golden bubble. Anytime someone says something or does something that irks you or upsets you, imagine the energy from their words, body language or actions bouncing off your protected bubble and reflecting back onto them.

It is, after all, their stuff that they’re trying to project onto you, and you’re just gently setting the intention that you don’t need to absorb it.

Affirmations to work with:

I am free from energy drains.

I protect myself and my energy at all times.

My energy is safe and completely mine.

I only allow positive energy, thoughts and vibrations to flow through me.

3. Release any energetic ties

When we surrogate for someone’s energy, it can be positive (like how I work with my kinesiology clients over Zoom) or less-than-positive, when we take on others’ energies because a part of us feels they are unable to look after themselves.

We take on other people’s stuff because we want to protect them, make them happy, or relieve them of some of their burden.

What this does is creates pressure on you though, and can leave you feeling depressed, anxious or fatigued.

Sit for a moment, take some deep breaths, and think of who you may be surrogating for. It’s usually the first person who pops into your mind.

Now, with your eyes close, imagine where this person is energetically “attached” to you, in or on your body.

Perhaps there’s an energetic rope or string coming out of your stomach, your solar plexus (upper stomach area), your chest or anywhere else. Slowly, gently and with love, pull the rope or string out from your body and energy field, and imagine yourself disposing of it in any way you choose.

Perhaps you’ll visualise yourself letting it wash away in the ocean, burying it in sand or under a tree, or wrapping it up in tissue paper and handing it back to this person.

Take some extra deep breaths in… and out. Now imagine yourself completely free of this person’s energy (in a loving way).

You’re not energetically cutting yourself off from this person in a way that might cause unease; you’re simply releasing the surrogating ties while sending love back their way.

This will help you come back to being completely you, and you’ll feel lighter and more aligned with yourself, your emotions and feelings.

Affirmations to work with:

I am free from energy drains.

I release all energetic attachments to… [insert name].

My energy is 100% protected.

I allow [insert name] to look after themselves and this protects my energy.

4. Clear the space

I love space clearing. It can wash away old vibes, negativity and staleness, and leave the room you’re in feeling clear, light and positive.

To clear your space, you can burn white sage or Palo Santo (sacred wood), place salt water in bowls in the room (just change it daily), place crystals in the corners of the room (clear them often), use energetic sprays or even just open the window and set the intention that any old, stale or negative energy will wash away with the wind.

Adding some lush green indoor plants will help too; not only do they make your space feel lighter and more beautiful, but they purify the air as well.

However, if your home is filled with clutter, or if the room you’re in feels like it needs some sprucing up, it doesn’t matter how many times you white sage the room, you may still feel cluttered and drained.

So, make some space.

De-clutter. Spruce up your home or office.

Allow yourself to feel light in your space by making your space feel light.

De-cluttering and beautifying your space is all about releasing and letting go of all the stuff you no longer need, and then making it feel beautiful, light and welcoming (or anything else you’re wanting it to feel).

It’s refreshing, and cleansing, and very important if you want to live or work in a space that vibrates at a high level and makes you feel vibrant, happy and powerful.

Affirmations to work with:

I clear and cleanse my space to invite in positivity and lightness.

My space is loving, protected and clear.

I allow simplicity and lightness into my home.

I easily and joyfully de-clutter and make my space feel beautiful, light and positive.

A little note on working with affirmations

If you choose an affirmation from the above list but it feels “stressful” in some way, don’t just keep repeating it.

Tune into why it feels stressful, and do something to help clear that stress, whether it’s through kinesiology sessions, journaling, yoga or something else that feels supportive.

And always remember that you get to choose when and to whom you offer up your energy.
