In the personal development + online business world, “growth” is a buzz word that makes us think of becoming a whole new person overnight…
… big external achievements, huge visibility numbers, leaps that require protein shakes afterwards, and ticking every single thing off every single list.
(And then buying a new notepad immediately because all the paper has been used up, in the quest for more and more growth!)
But it doesn’t always look like this.
Growth isn’t always loud, or shiny, or big, or even that obvious sometimes.
It isn’t always something you can measure, rate, or even replicate.
And it’s certainly not always something that obviously requires celebration.
But it’s there, when you look for it.
And I always like to look for it.
For me right now, growth looks like:
- Focusing on less in my business, when I love doing all the things
- Slowing down my work flow, to create with even more intention
- Finding a new rhythm and flow for my week, that holds all the pieces of what I want to create and share, but doesn’t overload my sometimes-squished-feeling schedule…
- Watching when and how my mind will latch onto old, negative narratives that do not serve me… and putting a pause between the thought, and the truth
- Being really kind to myself after big days of biz-running and solo-mumming
- Noticing when I’ll say to someone “it’s fine” or “I’m okay” when it’s very possible that it’s not fine, or I’m not okay… and being okay to sit with that feeling
And for my clients, it’s in the seemingly small things that were actual leaps for their past selves.
Like my client who’s stopped working Fridays, after years of thinking she never had enough time to work… because she can, even when her mind says she has so much to do. She knows she needs that time as a busy working mum, as a wife, as a woman who holds many roles, and wears many hats. She has shifted her work so it gives her space to live, and she likes it like that.
Like my client who, after having her biggest month ever, coached with me on releasing the old pattern of fear that she would sabotage her growth. She didn’t need to work harder to shift this belief—she decided to sit in her new identity. She reframed old self-sabotaging patterns, and made space for self-reflection with compassion. The growth was a big month, sure, but more than that… the growth was the shift in how she sees herself now.
And like my client who decided to allow herself to make a big purchase for her home, so she could finally (finally) let herself enjoy her own space even more, and allow herself to receive more good, ease, and gentleness into her life.
Or my client who actually decided that chasing big goals in her business wasn’t bringing her the joy it used to… so she lowered the bar a bit. Stopped chasing external success. Opened her laptop and started writing something she knew the people around her needed. That’s growth too.
Growth doesn’t have to be shiny, or even lead to shiny results.
Sometimes it’s small, gritty, and uncomfortable.
Sometimes it’s taking things off your plate, so your plate is lighter, and your heart feels brighter.
Sometimes it’s holding a boundary you’d never have thought you needed to hold.
Or making a choice you’d never thought you’d make.
Sometimes growth is breathing through really hard moments, and not collapsing into them.
It’s trusting the ripples of today, well before tomorrow comes.
And always, it’s about trusting yourself in this moment, and in every moment in between.
Growth might well ask you to stretch yourself. But sometimes the stretch isn’t in how much more you extend your energy to grow, but in how you bring your power right back into yourself.
I still love big, outward growth.
But this is the kind of growth I think about even more. The moments where you can see yourself differently; move a triggering moment through your energy before it explodes; shift an old thought without effort; sit with the discomfort and trust it’ll pass.
This is the kind of growth that leaves you sitting down with a coffee, staring out the window, hand on your heart, feeling proud of how you’re moving through life in the moments in between.
